Visible invisible, a personal exhibition take a place at the MUDEC in Milan on 15 May – 15 September 2019, brings together 50 large format photographic prints for various projects addressed by different theme.

Liu Bolin is known to the general public for his camouflage performances, an accurate body painting his body perfectly blends into the background. He was born in 1973 in Shandong Province, China. Liu Bolin grew up and developed his artistic personality in the ferment that coincided with the beginning of a rapid growth in the economy and relative political stability for China, a period of sweeping changes expressed in the “Hiding in the City” series that made him famous, and that touches on the universal themes of the relationship between man and nature, and between thinking and political power.

The dismantling of Suojia Village, north-east of Beijing, where the artist lived, was ordered by Chinese government authorities on 16 November 2005. This was the pivotal moment when Liu Bolin used a perspectival matrix to create the image that led to the series entitled “Hiding in the City”. By roughly tracing on his own body the lines of the rubble in his neighbourhood so that they converged with the vanishing point of the camera lens, Liu Bolin produced an image in which the perturbative element of space, represented by a physical three-dimensionality, forces the viewer to pause to look at that specific portion of reality.

เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐบาลจีนได้ออกคำสั่งในการรื้นถอนหมู่บ้าน Suojia ทางตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของปักกิ่ง ที่ศิลปินเคยอาศัยอยู่ เมื่อวันที่ 16 พฤศจิกายน 2548 กลายเป็นช่วงเวลาสำคัญที่ Liu Bolin ใช้มุมมองสองมิติเพื่อสร้างภาพที่นำไปสู่ซี่รี่ Hiding in the city โดยการร่างเส้นสายของเศษอิฐหรือหินในสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ตนอยู่ และใช้เทคนิคจุดลับสายตาของเลนส์ เขาสร้างภาพโดยใช้องค์ประกอบทางกายภาพสามมิติเข้ามารบกวนภาพ ในลักษณะที่พยายามจะกลมกลืนไปกับภาพ ทำให้ผู้ที่ชมต้องสะดุดและหยุดมองเพื่อพิจารณาเฉพาะเจาะจงสัดส่วนนั้น

In a synthesis of languages, the artist’s body becomes a living sculpture during the performance, immortalised in turn by a photograph, in the final act when the meticulous body painting executed by his assistants makes sure it is perfectly integrated with the background. What remains, the “fetish” added to the art system, is in actual fact a photographic image, but the event and the thinking behind each of the images cross the boundaries of “photography for photography’s sake”, condensing different techniques, on the one hand, and entering into the ever more diverse field of contemporary art, on the other.

ในเชิงการสื่อสารการแสดงศิลปะ ร่างกายของศิลปินจะกลายมาเป็นงานประติมากรรม ผลงานอยู่เป็นอมตะด้วยภาพถ่าย ในท้ายสุดเมื่อมั่นใจว่าร่างกายที่ถูกระบายสีโดยผู้ช่วยเข้ากันเป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกับพื้นหลังแล้ว สิ่งที่เหลืออยู่ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่ภาพถ่าย แต่คือเรื่องราว และแนวความคิดเบื้องหลังภาพเหล่านั้น ก้าวข้ามขอบเขตของการถ่ายภาพ อัดแน่นด้วยเทคนิคที่หลากหลาย หรือเรียกได้ว่า การเข้าสู่สาขาที่หลากหลายของศิลปะร่วมสมัย

 

Liu Bolin endorses the poetics of hiding to become thing among things, to show that all the places, all the objects, even the smallest ones, have a soul that characterizes them and in which one can blend, vanish, identify himself into the Whole. A philosophy born in the East, but which has conquered the entire world, especially the Western one.

Liu Bolin  ใช้การซ่อนตัวเพื่อกลายเป็นสิ่งต่างๆ ที่แสดงให้เห็นว่าในทุกๆสถานที่ ทุกๆวัตถุ แม้แต่วัตถุที่เล็กที่สุด ก็มีจิตวิญญาณของสิ่งเหล่านั้นอยู่ และมนุษย์สามารถผสมผสานและกลืนหายเข้าไปในสิ่งเหล่านั้นทั้งหมดได้ ปรัชญาที่กำเนิดขึ้นในตะวันออก แต่สามารถแพร่หลายไปทั่วโลก โดยเฉพาะโลกตะวันตก

The exhibition is curated by Beatrice Benedetti, on display about fifty works by the artist, in addition to the shot taken at the MUDEC among the artefacts of the museum’s permanent collection; among which a new shot of the Pieta Rondanini taken at the Sforza Castle of Milan and the photograph of the Caravaggio at the Borghese Gallery, hall never exhibited before.

Through his works Liu Bolin attempts to dissect the contemporary man to examine in depth the relationship between the civilisation created by man and man himself.

“The Migrants cycle”, a topic which is particularly dear to the MUDEC. Liu Bolin has involved other performers, and that is refugees who are the guests of a few migrant accommodation centres in Sicily. In this case, the identification with the background is replaced by the depersonalisation of the ego and of a people, which no longer have a face except the one of desperation and social protest.
